Where to Learn Photography in Teesside and North Yorkshire
Buying a camera is exciting. Working out what to do with it afterwards can be a different story. You start with good intentions, try a few settings, watch some videos and then find yourself back on automatic because the photographs aren’t quite coming out as you hoped. If that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not the only one. It’s something I hear regularly from people joining my photography workshops.
If you’re looking for photography courses in Teesside or North Yorkshire, it helps to think about what you actually want from the experience. Perhaps you want to understand your camera properly, photograph the birds visiting your garden or come home from a walk along the coast with photographs you’re pleased with. Having a particular interest gives us somewhere to start, even if you haven’t yet worked out which buttons do what.
I’m Stu Brown, a professional photographer based in Brotton, near Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and I run photography workshops across Teesside, North Yorkshire and the North East. My approach is straightforward: explain things clearly, give you time to practise and help you understand what happened when a photograph didn’t turn out as expected. There’s no expectation that you arrive knowing the terminology.
One of the difficulties with learning photography on your own is knowing which advice applies to you. A video might demonstrate a camera you don’t own, or jump into settings before explaining why you would use them. You can spend an evening watching tutorials and still feel unsure when you pick up your camera the following morning. During a workshop, we can look at your own equipment and work through the things that are causing confusion.
Students bring a mixture of cameras to my sessions, which is exactly how it should be. You don’t need the latest model or a bag full of expensive lenses to begin learning. What matters is getting comfortable with the camera you have and understanding the choices available to you. Often, a little individual guidance makes something click that has been frustrating you for months.
We’re fortunate to have plenty of places to enjoy photography around Teesside and North Yorkshire. From Saltburn and Redcar to Whitby and Scarborough, the coastline offers all sorts of opportunities, while the North York Moors provide a completely different landscape to explore. For anyone interested in wildlife, places such as RSPB Saltholme give us plenty to watch and photograph without having to travel far from Middlesbrough and the surrounding towns.
My workshops at Saltholme give students an opportunity to put their learning into practice at a reserve I always enjoy visiting. Being out with your camera helps connect the explanation to a real situation, with time to ask questions as you go. You begin to understand why a setting works, rather than simply remembering which number somebody told you to use.
For someone starting out, a beginners’ photography workshop provides a useful foundation. We look at exposure, focusing and composition, but the aim is to help you make decisions when you’re taking photographs. You should leave with a clearer understanding of your camera and something you can continue practising, rather than a head full of unfamiliar words.
If wildlife or landscapes are what get you reaching for your camera, a workshop in that subject may be the next step. Learning becomes more enjoyable when you’re photographing something that interests you. There’s also the social side of a group session: meeting other people, comparing experiences and realising that you’re not the only person who has struggled with a particular setting.
I also offer one-to-one photography tuition for people who would prefer individual help. These sessions are arranged with you and can concentrate on your camera, your interests and the areas you want to improve. That might mean starting with the basics or working through a particular difficulty that keeps getting in the way.
Students on my group workshops also receive a printed workshop guide to take home. There’s a lot to absorb during a session, and having something to refer back to helps when you’re practising afterwards. You don’t have to remember every explanation before you leave.
If you’re looking for photography courses in Teesside or North Yorkshire, have a look at my current group workshops and one-to-one tuition. Whether you’re based in Middlesbrough, Redcar, Saltburn, Whitby, Scarborough or further afield, you’re welcome to get in touch. Tell me what you’d like to photograph and which camera you use, and we can work out a sensible starting point together.
