Teaching Photography at RSPB Saltholme – Wildlife, Nature and Building Confidence with a Camera
One of the things I’ve really enjoyed over the last year is teaching photography at RSPB Saltholme. It’s one of those places that just works perfectly for beginner photographers. You’ve got wildlife all around you, peaceful surroundings, great walking routes and plenty of opportunities to stop, slow down and really enjoy photography properly.
Every time I run a workshop there, I’m reminded that photography isn’t just about the pictures — it’s about the experience of being outdoors, learning something new and noticing moments you’d normally walk straight past.
That’s exactly why I love teaching at Saltholme.
Most people who come along to my workshops aren’t professional photographers. In fact, a lot of them arrive saying the same thing:
“I’ve had this camera ages but don’t really know how to use it properly.”
And honestly, that’s exactly who the workshops are designed for.
We keep everything relaxed and easy to understand, covering the basics like aperture, shutter speed, ISO and composition in a way that actually makes sense without overwhelming people with technical jargon.
Once everyone starts getting comfortable with their camera, we head out around the reserve and put it all into practice properly.
That’s when the fun really starts.
Saltholme is brilliant for this because you never quite know what’s going to appear. One minute you’re photographing reflections across the water, the next there’s a heron stepping out through the reeds or birds moving across the lakes right in front of you.
It creates the perfect environment for learning photography naturally rather than forcing it.
One of the nicest things about these workshops is watching people relax as the day goes on. Cameras come off auto mode, confidence starts to build, and people begin seeing photographs rather than just taking snapshots.
There’s also something genuinely calming about spending a day outdoors with a camera. The combination of wildlife, fresh air, creativity and slowing down for a while has a real positive effect on people.
That’s a huge part of what I want these workshops to be about.
Yes, you’ll learn photography properly, but I also want people to leave feeling refreshed, confident and inspired to keep going out with their camera afterwards.
I’ll be back at RSPB Saltholme running more beginner-friendly photography workshops throughout the year, and I honestly can’t wait for the next one.
If you’ve ever wanted to properly understand your camera, improve your photography and enjoy a relaxed day surrounded by wildlife and nature, you’d be more than welcome to join us.
