Beginner Photography Workshop at RSPB Saltholme – A Relaxed Day Learning Wildlife Photography
I’ll soon be back at RSPB Saltholme running another Beginner Photography Workshop, and honestly, I’m really looking forward to this one.
Saltholme is one of those places that’s perfect for learning photography. You’ve got wildlife everywhere, open landscapes, peaceful walks and constantly changing light, which means there’s always something interesting to photograph no matter your experience level.
What I love most about running these workshops at RSPB Saltholme in Teesside is how relaxed they feel. There’s no pressure, no complicated jargon, and no expectation that you need expensive camera gear or years of experience. Most people who come along are simply wanting to understand their camera properly and feel more confident using it.
That’s exactly what these days are designed for.
We’ll start with a simple and easy-to-understand session covering the basics of photography — aperture, shutter speed, ISO and composition — before heading out around the reserve to put everything into practice properly.
Once people begin seeing how their settings actually affect the image, things start to click surprisingly quickly.
And honestly, that’s the best part of teaching.
Watching someone go from feeling overwhelmed by their camera to suddenly taking photographs they’re genuinely proud of is incredibly rewarding. Add in the wildlife, fresh air and peaceful surroundings of Saltholme, and it becomes far more than just a photography course.
It turns into a genuinely enjoyable day outdoors.
One thing I always notice during these workshops is how much people relax as the day goes on. Photography has this brilliant way of slowing you down. You start paying attention to details, light, movement and little moments in nature that you’d normally walk straight past.
Whether it’s a grey heron stepping quietly through the reeds, birds fighting over the water, or simply the reflections across the lakes, there’s always something happening at RSPB Saltholme Nature Reserve.
And because the workshops are beginner-friendly, there’s plenty of time to ask questions, practise properly and just enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.
That’s really important to me.
I never want these workshops to feel intimidating or overly technical. I want people to leave feeling excited about photography, more connected to nature, and genuinely confident to go out and keep using their camera afterwards.
If you’ve ever thought:
“I really should learn how to use this camera properly…”
…then this workshop is exactly for you.
The upcoming Beginner Photography Workshop at RSPB Saltholme is shaping up to be a brilliant day, and I honestly can’t wait to get back out there with another group of photographers.
